Reading The Room
The first thing we do on any project is understand the space properly. How the room sits within the house. Where the light falls at different times of day. What the ceiling height does to the proportions. How the kitchen connects to the room people eat in, or whether they are one and the same.
Norfolk kitchens tend to have strong characters. A farmhouse kitchen outside Fakenham or Holt has different demands to a terraced townhouse in Norwich. The scale is different, the light is different, the relationship between the kitchen and the garden is different. We design around what is actually there.
Style, Timber And Finish
The style of the kitchen follows from the building and the brief, not the other way round.
For the county’s older rural properties, kitchens with depth and presence tend to sit best. Painted cabinetry with carefully considered profiles, traditional joinery details, thick worktops, the kind of kitchen that looks like it was made for the room because it was. For more contemporary spaces and renovations with a cleaner aesthetic, a more restrained approach using the natural character of the timber is often the better answer.
Timber species, paint colour, worktop material and ironmongery are all chosen together as part of the design process. These decisions affect each other, and they all affect the finished result. We work through them with you rather than presenting a set of options to pick from independently.
How It Gets Built
A kitchen that is properly made lasts for decades. That is the point of commissioning one rather than buying one.
Every cabinet, drawer box, door and internal fitting is built at our Ipswich workshop from premium, sustainably sourced timber. The joinery is done by hand throughout. What is not visible gets the same attention as what is, because the hidden structure is what determines how the kitchen holds up after ten years of daily use.
The spray finish is applied in the workshop before anything leaves for site, so the quality of the surface is set before installation begins rather than depending on conditions on the day.
