Bespoke Doors London

A front door on a London terrace sits in a row of near identical properties where small differences in proportion are immediately visible, which is why Turner & Co Bespoke Joinery Ltd build every timber door to the exact dimensions of the opening rather than a standard size. The range covers front doors designed around the architecture of the property, alongside French doors and bifolds for rear extensions, built to suit either the weight of a period elevation or the fully open feel of a contemporary space. Every door is made from timber selected for the project and finished at our Ipswich workshop before installation, which holds up well against London's older buildings and daily heavy use.

In London, doors carry more weight than most people give them credit for. The front door is the first thing anyone sees, and on a Victorian terrace it sits in a row of identical properties where small differences in quality and proportion are immediately visible. At the back of the house, bifold or French doors are often the entire rear wall of a kitchen extension, a feature you look at from every room that faces the garden and live with every day.

Getting them right matters. Getting them wrong is hard to overlook.

At Turner & Co Bespoke Joinery Ltd, we design and build timber doors for London properties from our workshop in Ipswich. Every door is made to the specific opening and the character of the property it is going into.

Front Doors

A timber front door on a period London property is one of the most considered things you can do to a house. Not because it is decorative, though it is, but because it signals that the building has been taken seriously.

Most replacement front doors, even the ones that call themselves traditional, arrive in standard sizes with profiles that have been averaged out to suit as many openings as possible. On a terrace where the original doors had a particular scale and depth, that compromise is visible even to people who could not explain what they are looking at.

We build front doors to the exact dimensions of the opening, with profiles and details drawn from the architecture of the property. For listed buildings and homes in conservation areas, which covers a substantial portion of London’s period housing, this is often the only approach that satisfies planning requirements. For everyone else, it is simply the approach that produces a better result.

French Doors And Bifold Doors

Rear extensions in London almost always involve a decision about what goes across the back, and it is worth thinking through carefully because the two main options read very differently.

French doors hold the wall when they are closed and open to a proper threshold. There is a weight to them that suits period properties, where the rear elevation still has architectural character that a fully folding system would undermine. Bifold doors suit contemporary extensions and open plan spaces where the goal is to dissolve the boundary between inside and outside as completely as possible, with the entire wall folding back and the garden becoming part of the room.

We build both. The doors are made from timber selected for the project, finished at our Ipswich workshop and installed by our own team. Nothing is bought in separately.

Timber In A London Context

London puts doors through a lot. The combination of a dense urban environment, older buildings with imperfect openings and daily heavy use means the material and construction quality matters more than it might elsewhere. Timber that is properly selected and well built handles this comfortably. The spray finish applied at our workshop seals and protects the timber before it ever reaches site, which is part of why it holds up so well over time compared to doors that are finished on the day.

For period properties in particular, timber is also simply the right material. It has a presence and warmth that no substitute replicates.

Getting Started

We work on door projects across London, travelling from our Ipswich workshop. Turner & Co is a family run joinery business and we take on London work when the project suits what we do.
