London Properties Are Different
There is nowhere quite like London for the sheer variety and density of period housing. Victorian and Edwardian terraces line street after street across Islington, Hackney, Clapham, Wandsworth and Richmond. Georgian townhouses, Arts and Crafts villas, interwar semis. The city has it all, often within a few streets of each other, and every one of those property types presents a different brief when it comes to adding a conservatory.
What they tend to share is a sensitivity to what gets added to them. A poorly considered conservatory on a Victorian terrace looks exactly like what it is: something that does not belong. Timber changes that.
A handcrafted timber conservatory has the weight, warmth and character to sit comfortably against a period building rather than fighting with it, and for listed properties and homes within conservation areas, which London has in abundance, it is often the only material that feels genuinely appropriate.
How We Approach It
Every project starts the same way regardless of location. We visit the property, spend time understanding what you are working with and what you want from the space, and develop a design from there. Technical drawings give you a clear picture before anything is committed to, and once manufacturing begins everything is built by hand at our Ipswich workshop and installed by our own team.
For London’s period homes our oak framed conservatories are worth a conversation. The exposed structural frame, hand selected beams and traditional joinery techniques produce something that feels entirely at home against older brickwork and original architectural details.
Doors and windows are made alongside the frame, so whether the project calls for timber French doors, heritage sash windows or casement windows, everything comes from the same hands and finishes consistently.
A Word On Planning
London has more conservation areas, listed buildings and Article 4 directions than most parts of the country, and the rules around what you can build without planning permission are not always straightforward.
Some boroughs have introduced restrictions that go beyond the national permitted development guidance, so it is worth getting clarity on your position before any design work begins. We work through this with every London client at the outset, and where an application is needed we handle it properly from the start.
