Buildings That Ask More Of You
A listed building or a property in a conservation area is not just an older house. It is a building with a documented character, and any addition or replacement needs to respect that rather than approximate it. Planning authorities in Cambridge are experienced at distinguishing between work that has been done properly and work that has not, and a door that does not match the original in profile, scale and material is unlikely to pass.
We work with these constraints as a matter of course. The profiles, moulding depths, glazing arrangements and ironmongery positions are all drawn from the architecture of the specific property rather than from a standard specification. For many of the buildings we work on across Cambridgeshire, this is the only approach that is both appropriate and approvable.
Further Out
Away from Cambridge, the brief changes. The fenland market towns, the villages around Ely and Huntingdon, the rural properties across the county, these buildings have their own character and their own requirements.
Older farmhouses and cottages often have openings that have shifted over time. Floors are uneven, frames have moved, the original door was made for the specific opening rather than cut to fit a standard. A bespoke door made for the actual dimensions of the opening, rather than the nearest standard size, is the only way to get a result that sits properly in the frame and performs well over time.
French doors and bifolds for rear extensions and garden access are a regular part of what we do across the county too. The approach is the same as everything else: designed for the property, built at our workshop, finished before it comes to site.
Why Timber
Cambridgeshire’s older buildings were built in timber and the doors that suit them best still are. The weight, the warmth, the way it takes paint and holds it, the way a well made timber door feels to use, none of that is replicated by uPVC or composite alternatives. And for listed buildings and conservation areas, timber is often the only material that will be approved.
The spray finish applied at our workshop protects the timber properly before installation and produces a surface that holds up considerably better over time than anything applied on site.
